What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a complete in-depth antenatal training programme designed to release fear and build confidence for birth.

Hypnobirthing shifts the very unhelpful and ever popular notion, that childbirth is scary & painful; by giving us the skills to use our bodies in the way that they were designed to give birth.

Hypnobirthing reminds us that our bodies are designed to carry and birth babies, we just need to learn to trust in them again without the fear and horror that has unfortunately become synonymous with childbirth.

Hypnobirthing can’t promise a perfect birth. But by informing women to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies, Hypnobirthing mothers often have fewer interventions, fewer drugs and a more positive experience.

Hypnobirthing reminds us how empowering and truly awesome giving birth can be. By understanding the science involved in childbirth you’ll come to see that there is nothing hippy about hypnobirthing.

Emily trained with Jenny Mullan, who is the most experienced hypno-birthing trainer in the UK. Jenny herself was trained in the USA by Marie Mongan (the founder of hypno-birthing) and Jenny then brought hypno-birthing to the UK. This course is based on the science of how the brain and body work together and is approved by The Royal College of Midwifery.

What will I learn?

You will learn many skills to assist you during your pregnancy and birth.

These include;

Breathing exercises, deep relaxations, visualisations, exercises to release fear and build confidence, comforting massage, the importance of the birth partner, how your body is designed to give birth with efficiency and comfort, how to support your body to do that and understanding how the mind and body work together.

Then through your own personal practice you will begin to understand which skills work best for you, your partner and your baby for your own birthing experience.

What are the benefits of Hypnobirthing?

· You are likely to experience a natural, calm, comfortable birth.

· You may find you don’t need any pain relief at all.

· It often shortens the length of labour.

· You will be more alert and in control.

· Hypnobirthing lessens the physical impact of childbirth.

· Your birth partner is actively involved.

· It can allow your baby to enter the world drug free and in an atmosphere of calm and gentleness, which is important for instant bonding and establishing breastfeeding.

What can you expect?

When should I do the course?

I would advise doing the course as soon as you can into your pregnancy, so you can enjoy the benefits during your pregnancy as well as at the birth of your baby.  It is not so much a matter of learning facts so they are fresh in your mind, but more a matter of absorbing the information so that it becomes second nature, but Hypnobirthing works whenever you do it. I have taught these techniques to women who have birthed the day after the course and they were still very effective.

Birth fear and trauma.

Would you like to have a baby but are terrified of the labour and birth? Are you still troubled by previous birth trauma? If so, you’re not alone. And Emily can help.

Emily provides specialist, evidence-based therapy for women (and their partners) who have experienced birth trauma, or fear giving birth. Birth trauma is a form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is a wholly natural reaction to harrowing experiences. It often leads to an acute fear of giving birth, although this condition, known as ‘tocophobia,’ is also common among women who haven’t experienced labour.

"Birth fear and trauma. They’re common problems, but there is a way out. I understand what it’s like to be paralysed by birth fear and trauma. I will work with you (and your partner if you wish) to overcome your anxieties and achieve the joyful birth that you deserve. My approach works at a deeply therapeutic level and is fully individualised and evidence-based, no two sessions are the same. Yours will be designed for you, around your particular needs. Letting go of these fears can most often be done in one or two sessions. You may then decide to complete the full hypno-birthing course to feel really pre-pared and excited about your babies birth" - Emily Gajewski.

Coupling and Parenting

When a baby arrives it creates changes in every aspect of life in ways that, until then, are really hard (if not entirely impossible) to imagine! So many joys. The joys of all the ‘firsts’… The first cuddle, first feed, the first smile, laugh, the list of joyful moments is endless!

There is often so much focus on the baby and its needs that the parents and their needs (as individuals and as a couple) can be almost entirely ignored. It could be argued of course that this is entirely normal and natural and of course necessary... for a while!

However, there comes a point, usually when the cloud of new born mist begins to clear, that the parents can very slowly and gradually start think about some of their needs too. This is a challenge, (especially when sleep is the number one need) but actually for the health of the whole family, it is paramount.

Having a few sessions to looking at how to make your family function in the best possible way and set a ‘helpful and happy template’ for the years to come, can be an amazing start to family life. And of course, if things feel out of control and some help is needed, this is a really safe space to come and explore these issues and find a way forward.
